Straw In The Street

If anybody was ill at any time in the street, perhaps somebody was laying ill, and you would actually see this happen - they used to lay straw out in the street.

I've seen straw out in this street, ooh I was going to say six or seven inches, just outside the person's house, whoever was laying ill, just to deaden the sound like, y'know. Because everything was iron wheels in those days, there was no, well there might've been a few pneumatic tyres, nothing like that, that's what they used to do.

Well, anybody with a sore throat or anything, Dad used to - there was a couple of lads up the street from us had a sore throat, I don't know just was the matter with him, Dad went out

"I'll fix him"

Next thing he comes home "Here y'are, Mother" he said, I forget who is was now.

"Here y'are, Mother" he said,

"Tie this round their necks."

Damn great length of car-rope. Poor kid would be walking about with the hangman's noose by the look of it. Anyhow, it used to do the trick I suppose.

And he used to have a jar of (goose-grease?) and anything wrong with your chest from the cupboard.
