The Surgery Book

Then there was the Great Western Surgery.

Well everybody was issued with what they called a surgery book. And the doctor would come round and he did write the prescriptions in there and all that, and take it up the surgery and get yer medicine and things like that.

But there were certain things that you could get on demand like, y'know, such as vaseline, cod liver oil and malt I think you could get, and different little things like that you know, you didn't have to see the doctor about.

And every so often we used to belt up there with the surgery book “Box of Vaseline, please”

Bring it on home. That was vaseline for vaselining the football, all the kiddie's football boots, oh ah we never bought any dubbin in those days, they were all soaked in vaseline.
