The Hurdy Gurdy Man

I wonder how many of you remember the old Hurdy Gurdys as we used to call them?

An example of a Hurdy Gurdy Man
A Hurdy-Gurdy Man

Poor old chap, he used to come round with the organ and turn the handle, perhaps it had a monkey on top, I never see the monkeys on top. Well, we used to have an old couple come round this way you know, and old man with his wife like, y'know. It was always a Saturday dinner time. Up the street he was playing. One day, Dad went out

“Here Guv'nor. Does he know The Old Rugged Cross?”

Well, the old chap, all he had to do was turn the handle I suppose and pump a foot.

“Ah, want me to play it for yer?”

“Ah, you play that, The Old Rugged Cross.”

Well, he got and played The Old Rugged Cross. When he's finished Dad said

“Play it again….”

He played it again and Dad gave him a bob.

Do you know, it seemed we could never get rid of that Old Rugged Cross - for weeks and weeks and weeks he would come round playing The Old Rugged Cross.

I thought I'd just tell you that. That was about the same time that Fatty was making wireless sets you know…..
