Water Under The Floorboards

We always seemed to have a lot of water under our floorboards.

I don’t know where it came from. Every winter, if we had any rain, we always seemed to be flooded.

Dad was worried to death. He used to have a little floorboard that he used to take up now and again in the front room and inspect it so say.

Anyhow, in the end he decided to have a few floorboards up. He had a pump, I don’t know if it was an electric sort or what sort it was, but I remember this pump. Had it stuck out through the front window, and he was pumping out gallons. And the old man next door, old David Gough, he poked his head in,

“Having a go then, Joe?”

“Ah, what’s it like in your place David?”

“Dry as a bone, Joe”

Joe got a saw, stuck him down between the floorboards, not a drop of water. Damn good reason why. Poor old Dad was pumping it out for all the street, wasn’t he?”

Anyhow, that was all fixed up later on. We had it all cemented, we don’t get none of that trouble now. Oh it was a devil. I know some of them up here have still got the water – you could row a boat across some of them now.
